What is adult Psychotherapy?

Sometimes in life we can know something is wrong, but not know what or why. Here at Mahony & Wood we offer expert advice and understanding as well as therapies that have been proven to help more than just diagnosable problems and disorders. They have been proven to bring about long-term change and help people with an array of life issues and transitions. Sometimes we can feel ill or unwell and rely on the knowledge and expertise of medical professionals to tell us why. But who do we go to when it is not medical, when its emotional and/or behavioural and we just can’t explain why? Mahony & Wood pride themselves on being able to offer a service for a broad range of issues and problems and feel a genuine pleasure for the privilege to take these journeys of discovery and healing with those that engage with our service.

Psychotherapy is a general term that refers to talk therapy, counselling, psychosocial therapy, cognitive and behavioural therapies. It’s an over-arching term that describes psychological evidence-based approaches to therapy that have been based on research into the best way to help psychological problems. Psychotherapy allows the Client and therapist to enter into a therapeutic alliance, to bring about relief and wellbeing through insight, techniques and understanding of the issues.

What is Adult psychotherapy? (continued)

The term psychotherapy is derived from Ancient Greek psyche (ψυχή meaning “breath; spirit; soul”) and therapeia (θεραπεία “healing; medical treatment”). The Oxford English Dictionary defines it as “The treatment of disorders of the mind or personality by psychological methods…”. Psychotherapy is often dubbed as a “talking therapy”, though not all forms of psychotherapy rely on verbal communication. Children or adults who do not engage in verbal communication (or not in the usual way) are not excluded from psychotherapy; indeed, some types are designed for such individuals. Many forms of psychotherapy utilize techniques and reflective insight to build a person’s ability to communicate verbally and emotional, building our ability to communicate with those around us effectively can sometimes be very freeing and help with repressed emotional states and transitions and traumas we struggle to talk about.

Psychotherapy is a collaborative treatment based on the relationship between an individual and a psychotherapist. Grounded in dialogue, it provides a supportive environment that allows you to talk openly with someone who’s objective, neutral, and non-judgmental. You and your therapist will work together to identify and change the thought and behaviour patterns that are keeping you from feeling your best. The journey of life can often come with bumps in the road, psychotherapy has been found to help people return to, or build a new healthier emotional state of mind, resilience, wellbeing, and sense of happiness.

Signs that you could benefit from therapy include: -You feel an overwhelming, prolonged sense of helplessness and sadness -Your problems don’t seem to get better despite your efforts and help from family and friends -You find it difficult to concentrate on work assignments or to carry out other everyday activities -You worry excessively, expect the worst, or are constantly on edge -Your actions, such as drinking too much alcohol, using drugs, or being aggressive, are harming you or others
